The Beatles, AI, and a Grammy: "Now and Then" Makes History
In a remarkable fusion of classic artistry and modern technology, The Beatles have clinched their eighth Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance with "Now and Then." This track, which began as a late-1970s demo by John Lennon, was shelved in the '90s due to technical constraints. Fast forward to 2021, and filmmaker Peter Jackson's team employed machine-learning technology to isolate and enhance Lennon's original vocals and piano, enabling Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to complete the song.
The release of "Now and Then" in November 2023 marked a significant milestone as the first song with AI-assisted production to receive a Grammy nomination. At the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on February 2, 2025, it triumphed over contemporary acts like Green Day and Pearl Jam, underscoring the timeless appeal of The Beatles.
Despite some public confusion regarding AI's role, McCartney clarified that the technology was solely used to clean up existing recordings, with no artificial elements added. This achievement not only honors The Beatles' enduring legacy but also highlights the potential of technology to preserve and enhance classic works for future generations.
