Apple teases VisionOS App Store plans
It was clear during the Vision Pro announcement back in June that Apple planned to empower existing iPhone / iPad developers to easily transition their apps to Vision Pro. Normally - at least with advertising - it can be challenging to take a thing created for one channel and force it into another one. In fact, some might argue that it’s a best practice to AVOID such behavior and rather to create net new formats / derivative assets that take full advantage of the capabilities of each platform.
But this is Apple, and they play a different ball game (and they’ve arguably earned the right to do so). In this announcement about the forthcoming beta of VisionOS App Store, Apple details plans to make iPhone and iPad apps available by default on VisionOS, unless there is a specific feature not available on the new platform.
It will be very interesting to watch how this unfolds and to see how many developers build custom applications, make necessary UI tweaks to existing apps, and adjust monetization (including advertising) strategies for the new platform. Will a device that is undoubtedly a breakthrough device - purely from a technology POV - be able to command developer investment despite expected low sales volume in the first year plus?
Apple today announced that it plans to bring the new visionOS App Store to a developer beta release of visionOS this fall. The App Store will include apps and games built for visionOS, plus it will offer iPhone and iPad apps that are able to run on the headset.
By default, iPhone and iPad apps will be published automatically on the visionOS App Store, as most frameworks in iOS and iPadOS are included in visionOS. If an app requires a feature that is not available on Apple Vision Pro, App Store Connect will inform the app developer that it is not compatible and will need updates before it is made available to consumers.
